Striving to understand and experience the natural world has been an important part of my life since my childhood and photography has played an important role in my relationship with the earth and its environment. The continuing goal of my photography is to create images that not only illustrate the structure and composition of the earth and its environment but also capture the beauty and spirit of the earth. As a professional geologist and educator, I believe all individuals need to understand and appreciate how our dynamic planet works so that we can responsibly live together without harming our home. Nature photographers bear an important responsibility in bringing this message via our images to the general population. Much of my photography has grown out of the desire to create dynamic images that illustrate to my students geologic features and processes. My artistic side seeks to capture natural images with dynamic lighting and powerful composition. I currently use both 35 mm and 4x5 equipment to make my images. I have been fortunate to have traveled and photographed for over 25 years through out the United States and parts of South America and Europe. As an experienced climber I am particularly drawn to the mountain environment and its special challenges and many of my most satisfying images have been made in the mountain environment. I am a member of several professional societies including the Geological Society of America and the American Geophysical Union. I also am a member of the StockArtistsAlliance and I am a charter member of NANPA (North American Nature Photography Association).
